I'd be happy for it to be CC, since the OGL is a nothingburger, but not sure how it would work given its derivation from the original BX Essentials. Feel free to let me know if you do or find out.David Perryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07628991184561866521noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8994971001743872624.post-79482620986875390122024-01-23T21:23:10.935-05:002024-01-23T21:23:10.935-05:00In a sea of hundreds of rule-sets – ranging from c...In a sea of hundreds of rule-sets – ranging from commercial products to house rule docs – this remains the cleanest distillation of BX I have seen. In my opinion, it is the ideal starting point (just add classes and magic) for a diy-rpg endeavor. Given the OGL drama in recent months, I wish it were licensed via creative commons. Otherwise, however, you have given the community an amazing gift. I may make the original Google Doc available after a revision or two; good catch on the XP, I'm now not sure if I intended the math as-is or only added the page 17 reference as a convenience. Is there an RTF or other open-format raw text available for making a house-rule document?

Also, noticed a contradiction: Page 17 states that retainers "suffer a penalty of -50% to XP," while page 11 states retainers "receive a "50% share." Mathematically these aren't the same thing. The page 17 approach implies retainers receive as much XP as regular characters, then trash half of it (which would make bringing retainers along a bad move for a party, since the total award earned is lessened by this method). The page 11 wording, on the other hand, is in line with the original B/X half-share approach where retainers just receive a lesser portion of the total and no XP is lost.E.T.Smithhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04816067470809236388noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8994971001743872624.post-2829637619067125142019-03-09T10:05:49.447-05:002019-03-09T10:05:49.447-05:00Awesome, thanks for the mention! I really like the old fashione...Quite interesting. I really like the old fashioned print style of the fonts. It was a bit disconcerting at first to see no reference to race or class, but it ends up being quite useful as is for an open concept style of game wherein there is just the one, nondescript "race" (defaulting to Human, but need not be so) and no classes, just people. Of course it also readily allows for layering on additional material to bring it more in line with other retroclones. All in all, an exemplary foundation upon which to build a rules set.

Lastly, I would be interested in an article detailing your process of using G-Docs for publishing.Spiralboundhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01058997643317547694noreply@blogger.com
